School to Work program leads to life-long career

41

Before graduating Stevenson High School in 1986, Mary Selk took advantage of the UCS School to Work program and hasn’t looked back since. 36 years after joining the company as a part-time, School to Work employee, Selk is now a co-owner of Macomb Insurance Mart, Inc.

“I know insurance to most people is confusing or boring, but I like it,” Selk said. “I like where I work, who I work with and I like helping people and helping them understand coverage what they have or what they may need.”

One of the original five owners, John Harvey, now co-owner with Selk, can still recall back to when he hired Mary.

“She seemed to fit in almost immediately,” Harvey said. “We just thought it to be a temporary scenario, but time marches on and it worked out perfectly.”

“I couldn’t get along without her at this point,” Harvey added. “She is quite helpful.”

Macomb Insurance Mart, Inc. is set to celebrate their 40th anniversary from 3-6 p.m. on Friday, August 12 at their Clinton Township location. Selk will be celebrating the occasion, thanks much in part to the UCS School to Work program.

“I was able to try something that I thought I would have an interest in through the program,” Selk said.

“The UCS School to Work program has changed my life by giving me a career that I enjoy doing.”

UCS is proud to offer School to Work to help give our students employment opportunities throughout our community. If you are interested in enrolling in the program as a business partner or as junior or senior student, please contact one of our School to Work Coordinators:
