Leafs come up short in Milwaukee

The Goshen women's volleyball team started their 2022 season in Milwaukee on Saturday at the Stitch Wolves Triangular but could not come away with a win. The Leafs lost to Waldorf in three sets in the first match and to Cardinal Stritch in three as well.

Waldorf held a 16-8 lead in the first set, but Goshen battled with an 11-5 run to tighten the gap to two. Waldorf pulled through and won the set 25-20 and was more dominant in the second during a 25-12 game. Goshen was neck and neck with the Warriors in the third until the team from Iowa scored the last five points of the set, winning 25-19.

Waldorf had 12 aces compared to one for the Maple Leafs. Goshen hit .381 in the first set but committed more errors in the second and third. Junior Amy Baca led Goshen with eight kills. First-year Brenna Spangler had four block assists to her name and two kills. Sophomore Jaelyn Amhdar had eight assists and three digs, first-year Sydney Stutsman had ten assists and five digs, and junior Gwyn Bellamy totaled five kills and eight digs.

The first two sets in Goshen's second match had a similar ring to the close sets against Waldorf. The Leafs were in it until losing a few key points late in the sets that put Cardinal Stritch over the edge. The Wolves had to fight to win the first two sets 25-21 each until taking the third by a score of 25-12.

Cardinal Stritch had eight aces and 42 kills. Baca and sophomores Emily Lynch and Sadie Brenneman racked up six aces each. Amhdar brought in 12 assists and five digs, while Stutsman added eight assists. First-year Kennedy Land led the team in digs with six.

Goshen is at home next weekend for the Goshen College Tri-Match. The weekend starts on Friday, August 26, at 2:00 pm with Calumet College of St. Joseph facing Rochester. Goshen will then play Rochester at 4:00 pm and CCSJ at 6:00 pm. Saturday's action starts at 11:00 am as Goshen meets Rochester. The 1:00 matchup will be Rochester and CCSJ, and the Leafs return to battle CCSJ at 3:00 pm.
