Tennis teams earn resounding victories on Senior Day
The men's and women's tennis teams earned Senior Day wins on Friday afternoon in Goshen. The men cruised by Judson 6-1, and the women followed suit, winning 5-2.
Head coach Evan Atkinson recognized the four seniors among the teams before the matches got underway. The Goshen seniors are Kevin Bollmann, Wesley Beck, Sarah Hinshaw, and Hannah McCoy.
The men won all the singles competitions from no. 2 to no. 6 and won the team point 2-1. Filippo Gallo and Kevin Bollmann won in tiebreaks, Pedro Scattolon and Insee Akarapan won in straight sets, and Mario Gomez won after a Judson injury.
Akarapan and Gallo won in no. 1 doubles 7-6(5) and Bollmann and Gomez won in no. 3 doubles 7-5.
The women won in no. 1 and no. 2 singles from the play of Sude Aytekin and Carmen Aliaga and took no. 5 and no. 6 singles by default. Aliaga fought through a tough matchup, defeating Anastasia White 7-6(2), 5-7, (10-8). Aytekin won in no. 1 singles 6-1, 6-1.
The Leafs won no. 3 doubles by default, and the team of Aytekin and Szofia Kallai won 6-2 in no. 1 doubles. Goshen won the team point 2-1.
The women are an eight seed in the Crossroads League tournament and will face the one seed Indiana Wesleyan. The men meet Cardinal Stritch on Saturday, September 17, at home at 11:00 am. Then they will face Indiana Wesleyan in the league tournament as well. The Maple Leafs are the five seed, and the Wildcats are the four seed in that matchup. Both teams will start the tournament at Indiana Wesleyan on Tuesday, September 20, at 4:30 pm.
