Rocky start leads to SAU win over GC

After starting the season 5-1 and 1-0 in conference, the Goshen women's basketball team lost for the third straight game at the hands of Spring Arbor on Saturday. A blazing start led to a 79-61 victory for the Cougars.

Zion Neat hit an early three for the Leafs to go up 3-2, but the home team dominated the rest of the first quarter. They scored the next 18 points to go up 20-3. Sa'drea Rougeau hit a bucket at the end of the quarter, but the lead was at 20-5 heading into the second. Goshen had just the two first quarter scores.

GC started to get into a rhythm in the second quarter but were still outscored by four as the lead went to 19 at the half. The Maple Leafs offense was clicking in the third - putting up 24 points and cutting in on the deficit. But it was too little and too late with Spring Arbor winning by 18.

After a couple of rough shooting performances against Grace and Saint Francis, Zion Neat came back by shooting 61.5% this afternoon and scoring 21 points. She was 4-5 at the free-throw line and had four rebounds - though she fouled out of the game. The Leafs had a season-high 24 fouls - Zoe Zellers and Syanne Mohamed finished with four each. Zellers had nine points, seven boards, and no turnovers. Sa'drea Rougeau had nine points and seven rebounds. Kyla Foster totaled seven points, five rebounds, and three steals.

Alana Nelson guided the Cougars with her 25 points and 15 rebounds. The Cougars were 9-20 from the three-point line while Goshen was 3-12. SAU is now 5-3 this season.

Goshen (5-4, 1-3 CL) hosts Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday, December 10. Tip-off is set for 1:00 pm.
